Lone Survivor

Recently I saw the movie "Lone Survivor" produced by Universal Pictures, starring Mark Wahlberg as navy seal Marcus Luttrell.

The movie is based on Luttrell's true story - that being while during a mission in Afghanistan fighting the Taliban in June of 2005, he and 3 other navy seals engaged approximately 40 Taliban soldiers during a reconnaissance mission. Three of his fellow seals died in the attack and Luttrell was the only survivor.

In the movie, Mark Wahlberg, the character playing Luttrell, is seriously injured and, in real life, Corpsman First Class Marcus Luttrell suffered severe injuries during the attack.

I would encourage anyone that is interested in either military history or the plight of our solders in Afghanistan to go an see the movie.

Also, the movie brings to light some real life issues that our veterans are going through including the challenge our vets face upon returning from war zones. Marcus Luttrell's own charity, The Lone Survivor Foundation, can be accessed at lonesururvivorfoundation.org.

He seeks to restore, empower, renew hope for our wounded service members and their families through health, wellness and therapeutic support.

Additionally, those interested in making a donation to veterans' causes, might consider contacting the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America of iava.org.

A good friend of mine from Bucknell University and fraternity brother, Pete Griffin, is the strategic partnership's director and would be happy to hear from any individual willing to donate to the IAVA's various causes www.iava.org.
