In this week’s Legal Tip Tuesday, Attorney Joyce Novotny-Prettiman explains why texting while driving is one of the leading causes of motor vehicle crashes and is now illegal under Pennsylvania’s new handheld device law. Joyce shares why the one-year grace period matters, how severe the risks are, and why putting the phone down saves lives.

Hi, my name is Joyce Novotny-Prettyman. I’m one of  the attorneys at the Quatrini Law Group who deals with people who have personal injury claims, and  here’s your Legal Tip Tuesday. One of the things that we see very often that causes motor vehicle  collisions are people texting while driving. It is a very dangerous thing to do. It’s very  difficult not to touch your phone because we are all attracted to our phone, but it is  also something that is against the law in Pennsylvania. There is a one-year grace  period where if you are caught texting while driving or doing anything handheld  with your device, you will get a warning. After that, there will be charges filed against  you. The reason for the law is to bring attention to the fact that texting while driving is  very dangerous. Statistically speaking, it is as dangerous as driving drunk. Don’t do it even though it’s tempting. We want to keep you safe, your family safe,  and everyone on the highway safe, so if you think about texting while driving, simply don’t do  it. Take care, and that’s your Legal Tip Tuesday.
