In 2021, the VA extended the presumptive period for Gulf War conditions to Dec. 31, 2026 for veterans experiencing qualifying chronic disabilities to claim VA disability compensation and receive presumptive consideration that their disabilities were caused by burn pit exposure. Now the extended deadline is fast-approaching. What does this mean for Gulf War veterans?
The December 31, 2026 deadline is for symptoms to appear or become severe enough to rate. It is not a deadline to apply. However, filing for condition at or before this deadline makes it easier for the VA to determine when the symptoms started, and easier to actually receive benefits.
