Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are synthetic chemicals, often known as “forever” chemicals because they do not break down in the environment. They can be found in a wide variety of products such as food, fabric, adhesives, and carpeting. They are also found in fire-fighting foams (or aqueous film forming foam; AFFF).

Quatrini Law group has worked with Veterans who may have been exposed to PFAS during their service. The Department of Defense investigated the extent of PFAS contamination and found 723 installations where PFAS may have been used or released.

Who May Qualify for PFAS Exposure VA Disability Benefits

Illnesses or diseases related to PFAs are NOT a presumptive condition. Currently, a number of Federal agencies are exploring the relationship between PFAS and certain conditions, including liver damage, thyroid conditions, and certain cancers.

However, if you believe your medical condition is service-related and may be connected to exposure to PFAS, Quatrini Law Group can help you to file for Veterans Disability benefits.

Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF)

Aqueous film forming foam (AFFF) is a fire suppressant used to extinguish high-intensity, flammable liquid fires. It has been linked to numerous health conditions and the military is phasing out its use.

Other PFAS exposure

Even if you did not directly work with AFFF, you may have been exposed to PFAS during your service. The DOD has identified over 700 bases where PFAS were found to have contaminated soil and water.

Frequently Asked Questions About PFAS Exposure Veterans’ Disability Benefits

What are PFAS?

Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) are man-made chemicals that have been used in a wide variety of consumer products as well as fire-fighting foam. They have a chain of linked carbon and fluorine atoms that do not break down easily, if at all. Federal agencies are exploring the health effects of PFAS.

How are Veterans exposed to PFAS?

Some Veterans may have been exposed to PFAS through the use of aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) for firefighting training and emergency responses on military bases. The chemicals would have leaked into the water and soil, causing contamination. Inhalations of fumes and contact with skin are other exposures.

Do I need an attorney to claim benefits related to PFAS exposure?

While it is not required to have an attorney to claim benefits related to PFAS exposure, it is highly recommended. PFAS are NOT a presumptive exposure for VA benefits. Therefore, every Vet must present their own evidence and disabilities are decided on a case by case basis. Using an attorney familiar with the process may be advantageous.
