In this Legal Tip Tuesday, Attorney Teresa Rerko explains how compassionate allowances work in Social Security Disability cases. With more than 300 qualifying conditions, these cases can move much faster, but they’re not automatic approvals. Teresa breaks down what the SSA looks for and how these conditions impact the disability process.

Good morning, I’m Teresa Rerko at Quatrini Law  Group, and this is a Legal Tip Tuesday. Today I wanted to talk a little bit about what’s called  compassionate allowances. Those are conditions that the Social Security Administration  has defined as making it a little bit easier to get approved for disability benefits. Often, people will say, is it an automatic if I have this condition that I’ll get approved? And  my answer is maybe. It depends on all the other factors that Social Security looks at whenever  they evaluate a disability claim. I will say that if you have one of those conditions, it  will move much faster than the normal 4 to 6 months that it takes to be evaluated. So if you have one of those conditions, and by the way, there are 300 of them, and I just  so that you see there are three single-spaced pages with the list of all of those  conditions. Generally, they include things like various cancers, many different  types of cancers, many childhood conditions. But there are all kinds of conditions listed on  the compassionate allowances, So it’s something that we look at with every case as we evaluate it. Oftentimes, they are very rare conditions, so you probably don’t have the condition. If  you do, it will make it easier to be approved for disability benefits by the Social Security  Administration. That’s your Legal Tip Tuesday.
